FAQ'S about Insurance Coverage of Acupuncture Treatments

Can I still receive an acupuncture treatment here and have it covered by my insurance?

Yes. The category under which it is covered has changed. Most insurance companies have elected to now categorize acupuncture treatments provided by a chiropractor, as chiropractic rather than acupuncture.

There have been cases where the insurance company will still cover acupuncture as an acupuncture benefit, so we encourage you to speak directly with your insurance company to clarify exactly what your individual benefits include.

What is the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (TCMPAO)?

This is a fairly new regulatory body that was created to license TCM doctors and acupuncturists who were not already being governed by a regulatory body. The mandate of all health regulatory colleges is to protect the public.

Drs. Da Re, Sinclair, and Mertins are regulated by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario in addition to being members of the Acupuncture Council of Ontario. As a result, they are not members of the TCMPAO.

Why is my insurance company only allowing me to use my acupuncture benefits for acupuncture claims performed by members of the TCMPAO?

After covering acupuncture services provided by chiropractors, MD’s and physiotherapists for decades, insurance companies took the creation of the TCMPAO as an opportunity to restrict acupuncture claims. They abruptly stopped covering acupuncture treatments provided by anyone outside of the TCMPAO, creating a lot of confusion for their clientele. This restriction limits an individual’s ability to access all of their benefits, likely providing significant savings for the insurance companies.

What will my receipt for acupuncture look like?

Payments for all acupuncture and combined chiropractic/acupuncture treatments received here will be listed as chiropractic treatments on your statement. This is how the insurance companies have instructed us to proceed.

If you have spoken with your insurance company and have been told your acupuncture benefits include acupuncture provided by a chiropractor, please inform our staff directly and we will print your receipt accordingly.

Please do not hesitate to speak with any of us if you require any further information.
